Amazon s3, or simple storage service, is a web service-based storage solution, often referred to as a cloud, where customers are billed monthly, by the gig for storage and bandwidth. Advantages of using this architecture is scalability, reliability, and simplicity. Everystockphoto.com is now using amazon s3 to increase its ability to respond under load conditions, and allow it to begin indexing ever increasing volumes of photos. Its servers are now free to optimize for serving the php/mysql application and not worry about being file servers as well.
